the experiment is fundamentally flawed. The point of pedaling in a circle is to split the required work between the quads and the hamstrings. You will roughly produce the same lactate, consume the same oxygen, and have the same heart rate on both peddle styles because there is no more work being done on platforms than on clipless pedals for x amount of pedaling. What's more important to take into account is muscle fatigue. If you can properly distribute the revolution work between your quads and hamstrings, you will effectively be able to ride longer.
