Hello all!
Seems weird to be thinking about riding singletrack when the snow is deep outside the chalet and we've been snowboarding down (and snowshoeing up) the local trails. That said, we've been thinking about summer a lot recently and working hard to get everything sorted out for the 2010 season. It's been a long time coming, but our summer 2010 calendar is now finalised and we're very excited about it. The full details, dates & prices are all on the site at www.whiteroomchalet.com/sumprices.htm. As well as the Singletrack riding weeks and Backcountry weeks that we've been offering for the last couple of seasons, there are some new trips for this summer:
Dirt School Coaching Week
We're very pleased to announce that we've teamed-up with the guys at Dirt School to plan a coaching week for experienced riders on the 10th of July. The week is aimed at getting riders who are already pretty confident to take the next step - ride faster, corner better, go bigger! This will be coached by Andy Barlow (Scottish XC national champ, Scottish coast-to-coast race winner, former Scottish junior DH champ and top all-round rider) but Chris Ball (world-cup DH rider and coach to junior DH world champ Ruariadh Cunningham) is also hoping to drop in for a couple of days en-route to the next World Cup destination. Price for this week will be slightly higher than our other trips, this reflects the very low (max 1:3) coach/guide to rider ratio and is pretty stunning value for what's included. The format of the week will be to alternate 3 days of dedicated coaching with days ripping-up the trails, making good use of those newly-learnt skills. The Dirt School team also run coaching sessions in Scotland and Wales and we'd highly recommend these as a good way of giving your riding a boost before a trip to the Alps. See www.dirtschool.co.uk for more info.
Downhill Weeks
We've run a few impromtu trips for downhillers and these have been a lot of fun, so we've decided to put a couple of dates in the diary to run dedicated downhill riding holidays. These are for riders on big DH/freeride bikes who don't do uphill. We'll use Sainte Foy's strategic position among all the other resorts to ride at a different venue each day, including DH trails at Tignes, DH & BikePark riding in Les Arcs, Downhiller-friendly technical singletrack in Sainte Foy, a road-trip across the Italian border to Pila and finally either more DH in La Plagne or a short trip back into Italy to ride the steep, chairlift accessed singletrack of La Thuile. This is world-class DH riding, including an Avalanche Cup course in Les Arcs and a World Champs course in Pila.

Cross-Country Epic Weeks
Inspired by the brave souls who have scorned our offers of uplift vans and chairlifts to sweat manfully up endless inclines, we've created some riding weeks which are as much about the ups as the downs. While we'll still make some use of the van to let us ride different areas each day, most of the height-gain on these weeks will be by pedal-power. We'll avoid roads as much as possible and climb on singletrack or doubletrack to reach some of our classic singletrack descents. Even better, making more use of pedal power will let us ride some cracking trails that are hard to build into our usual gravity-assisted rides and get further out into backcountry. Stevo is hitting the turbo-trainer and pricing up hard-tails already...

Alpine First-Timers Weeks
We get a lot of enquiries from people who aren't sure if they're ready for a trip to the Alps or are coming on holiday with their significant-other and aren't sure they'll be able to keep up with the group. To smooth this transition, we've created the Alpine First-Timers weeks. These trips will involve some more focussed coaching than our other weeks and are aimed at intermediate level riders who want to have fun riding the best singletrack trails we can offer, but also make some progress with their riding at the same time. We want to be very clear about one thing - this won't be a dumbed-down fireroad-riding week. We don't do that. Riders on this trip will ride many of the same great trails as on our other trips, just at a slightly slower pace and with more input from us to get you riding in style.
Other New Stuff for 2010

As promised in our last newsletter, there is more new stuff in place for 2010. The most important is that we've increased the number of guides so that we can split into separate riding groups and avoid having a big spread of abilities on one ride. More riding groups means more people so we'll be running 2 chalets next summer during the peak season. We'll also have more bike storage space and another van to shuttle bikes & riders around. Within TinTin, the Oven Room has had a major upgrade and is now a proper room (with a door!) which can be used as either a double or a twin - this should mean we rarely have to use the bunks from now on. Iona's going to be guiding full time and we'll be recruiting a third guide as well. Speaking of recruitment, we'll also be looking for 2 chalet chefs and one chalet host / driver to help us out. If you're interested in working with us in the Alps for the summer, let us know. Fear not though, even though Iona's going to be allowed out of the kitchen to hit the trails, we'll be making sure the quality of the cakes is maintained at the level you've come to expect!

Shiny Gear for Less

With Iona guiding full time next summer, she has just invested in a new bike to do it on - a LaPierre Spicy 516, sorted out for us by Mark and the guys at The Bike Chain in Edinburgh. The Bike Chain have also very generously offered all our 2010 guests an extra 5% discount off their on-line prices (already 10% below shop price) for all those fat tyres, knee-pads and brake upgrades that are a top idea for a trip to the Alps. There's a code required at check-out to access the discount - we'll send this with booking confirmation but if you've already booked a trip for this summer and would like to take advantage of the offer, email me for the code. Check out the shop at www.thebikechain.co.uk.
Looking forward to hitting the trails with lots of you this summer,
Cheers,

Stevo & Iona
